Maybe it’s just me, but I find this (p)interesting!
In October, I wrote about the recently filed lawsuit of Pinterest vs. Pintrips, filed on October 4, 2013. My original posting on the lawsuit is here.

In the five count Complaint (full Complaint PDF here), Pinterest takes on start-up company Pintrips for its similar name (similar in appearance, sound, and commercial impression) and the fact that users already often use Pinterest to pin travel-related ideas.

Recently, Pinterest rolled out a new map overlay for pinning your travel destinations.
Its name? — Place Pins.

Pinterest describes the Place Pins as follows (my emphasis):

About a year ago, we noticed Pinners creating more and more boards around the vacations they’re planning, special places near where they live and sites they want to see someday. In fact, every day people Pin about 1.5 million places, and now there are more than 750 million Pins of these destinations on Pinterest. We asked ourselves, how can we help people turn their travel inspiration into reality? Today, we’re taking a first step toward that goal with Place Pins.

Place Pins were designed to combine the beautiful imagery of a travel magazine with the utility of a map online so you can share it with friends. You can access them from anywhere on your Android device or iPhone, too, which means you can find new places on the go and even get directions!

Place Pins also include extra details like the address and phone number right on the Pin so you can easily pull up useful info on a weekend adventure or before a night out.

Pinterest travel tips

So many travel destinations to pin!

Now, in my opinion, Pintrips is far and away a better name than Place Pins, especially for a company that has become a leader in social media, valued at $3.8 billion, has 70 million users, and attracts 2.5 billion page views a month. Was that REALLY the best name Pinterest could come up with… or did Pintrips lay claim to a better name before Pinterest could?

OVERTIME
To follow-up on the status of the Pinterest vs. Pintrips lawsuit, the case (Case No. 3:13-cv-04608-RS; N. Dist. Cal. (San Fran)) is assigned to Judge Richard Seeborg and set for a case management conference on January 23, 2014, with Pintrips to answer the Complaint by January 6, 2014.
