While you’re exploring hunting around New York City for your favorite Pokemon, pause for a moment or two to step back in time some 150 years ago to see the neighborhoods of NYC in a different time with OldNYC.

You’ve been able to explore the some 40,000 historical photos of the New York Public Library online at OldNYC, but now you can experience the collection via the OldNYC app and create your own self-guided tour thanks to geocoding. While there may be no Pokemon to capture along the way (at least not through the app itself), you might actually learn some history across the thousands of locations around Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island.

OldNYC App

See how buildings and life has changed in NYC over the past 150 years!

All photographs are from the New York Public Library’s Milstein Collection dating from the 1870s-1970s comprising of over 80,000 original photographs. While many photographers contributed to the collection, the majority of its images are the work of Percy Loomis Sperr, who documented changes to the city from the late 1920s to the early 1940s.
