Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner approved a new law today in Illinois that should make it easier for breastfeeding mothers to find a private place to feed and pump while traveling through airports in Illinois, including Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW).

The new Illinois law creates the “Lactation Accommodation in Airports Act” and requires airports operated by a city, county, city and county, or airport district that conducts commercial operations and that has more than 1,000,000 enplanements a year to provide a room or other location at each airport terminal behind the airport security screening area for members of the public to express breast milk in private. Also, should any airport in Illinois that conducts commercial operations build a new terminal or conduct the replacement, expansion, or renovation of an existing terminal, it too shall comply with the Act. Compliance with the new law must occur by January 1, 2017.

The private facilities must include, at a minimum, a chair and an electrical outlet and be located outside of the confines of a public restroom. Amends the State Mandates Act to require implementation without reimbursement.

Travelers Aid Chicago reports that, “A Mother’s Room is now open [at ORD] in the mezzanine of the Rotunda in Terminal 3! This tranquil space is for any traveling moms who want a more private space to nurse or pump.” Photos below per Travelers Aid Chicago’s Facebook Page.
